Theories of the Night: A Queer Affair with the Trans in Translation

Thursday, May 21Today·12:30pm – 2:00pm

Comparative Literature Colloquium Series: Intertextual encounters with the night in works by María Moreno, Djuna Barnes, and Camila Sosa Villada mobilize translation to mock ideologies of authorship endemic to North normativity. Theories of the night at once consolidate and repudiate queer modernism’s figurations of trans while mobilizing techniques—from creative plagiarism to cannibal translation—that surface decolonial methods of mediation. What results not only underscores how the self is an intertextual fiction, but also, how that fiction incorporates the marrow of alterity into its textual articulation.
